Now, we’re seeing the culmination of that. It was seen by some as a great moment for gay representation, but for others, it seemed like a cop-out – a way to say your book has gay representation without actually having anything gay happen or mentioned in the text itself. The only thing that could really be pointed to was his alluded-to, once-close relationship with the evil wizard Grindelwald. Rowling made quite the commotion when she declared that Dumbledore was gay, despite there not really being anything in the books to indicate that. There you have it, the gay Harry Potter moment we’ve been waiting 15 years for. “Because I was in love with you,” Dumbledore says. In the clip, Grindelwald tells Dumbledore that with or without him, he’s going to “burn down their world” and asks him if he intends to turn his back “on own kind.” “It was you who said we could reshape the world,” the villain says. In a new TV spot for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore film, Dumbledore (Jude Law) finally confesses his love for Grindelwald (now played by Mads Mikkelsen). It’s been a long, long time coming, but there’s finally a textually gay moment in a Harry Potter movie.
